Ollie Bearman was barely three months old when Fernando Alonso won his first world championship in 2005 – but on his Formula One debut in Mexico City, the Essex 18-year-old finished ahead of the double world champion tennis
“That was an added bonus,” he said with a broad smile tennis
On Friday, Bearman made history by becoming the youngest British driver to step foot in an F1 machine at a Grand Prix weekend tennis
And he quietly impressed, too tennis
Competing for American outfit Haas, Bearman finished 15th in first practice, only 1 tennis
6 seconds slower than triple world champion Max Verstappen, and three tenths adrift of Nico Hulkenberg – a veteran of 200 grands prix – in the other Haas tennis
He was also speedier than Alonso tennis
Five rookies were fielded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and Bearman was quickest of them all tennis
Raised in Chelmsford, and schooled at King Edward VI Grammar, Bearman joined Ferrari’s driver academy, aged only 16 tennis
Bearman had just won both the German and Italian Formula Four championships, and his performances made those at Maranello sit up and take note tennis
He quit school – despite initial resistance from his mother, Terri – left the family home in Chelmsford, and moved to Modena, a dozen miles north of Ferrari’s headquarters in northern Italy tennis
Two years on, and his Italian twang is noticeable tennis
“Maybe I got a bit lucky not to get the Essex accent,” he joked, in an interview with the PA news agency tennis
I miss my family, my two dogs - I have an English Bull Terrier and a Boston Terrier and they are very cute - and that is the negative side tennis
But the food in Italy is a big chunk above the English stuff, and the weather is tennis better, tooOllie Bearman“A lot of people have told me my accent has changed even if I don’t notice it tennis
I spend a lot of time with Italians and to communicate with people where English is not their first language is not easy, so I have changed my word order and ended up with this everywhere accent tennis
“When I moved to Modena it happened pretty quickly tennis
It was like going to university two years early, but I have loved every moment so far tennis
My mum was very pro-school and very pro-education, but we managed to convince her in the end tennis

”Following four victories in his rookie Formula Two season – the feeder series to F1 – Bearman was thrust into the spotlight in Mexico City, eclipsing Lando Norris as the sport’s youngest Brit tennis
Norris, now in his fifth season, was three months shy of his 19th birthday when he took part in practice for McLaren in Belgium in 2018 tennis
Bearman turned 18 in May tennis
When Lewis Hamilton made his F1 bow, Bearman was only 18 months old tennis
Yet on Friday, he shared the same asphalt as the seven-time world champion tennis
“When I heard Hamilton was coming up behind me on a push lap I was like ‘wow, I will get out of the way’,” he added tennis
However, it was Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, the 2009 world champion Jenson Button, who was Bearman’s childhood hero tennis
“I heard Jenson was praising me on Sky, and that was amazing for me to hear,” he adds tennis
“I don’t know why, but he was always the guy I loved and really looked up to tennis
It is cool that he recognised my performance in practice, and I will try to speak to him here – that is my goal tennis
”Bearman will remain in F2 next season and he will be back in an F1 machine in practice for Haas – effectively Ferrari’s B team – next month in Abu Dhabi tennis
“It is really cool that I have been given this opportunity,” he said tennis
“My whole career has been a pinch-yourself moment, and this is another one tennis
“Ferrari is such an elusive team tennis
They are an iconic brand, they have an iconic colour and they have the best-looking car on the grid tennis
They are putting a lot of trust in me, and loyalty is an important part of this paddock tennis
“Of course my goal is to become a Ferrari driver, and I need to do that with my performances on track tennis
Today was an amazing moment, and one I will savour for years to come tennis
“It is a shame it was only practice, but it is all part and parcel of the work we have been doing to get to the top tennis

A major military and police operation is underway in Colombia to search for the father of Liverpool forward Luis Diaz after he was kidnapped with his wife near the country’s border with Venezuela tennis
Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were stopped in their car at a petrol station and kidnapped by gunmen on motorbikes in the northern city of Barrancas on Saturday, but Diaz’s mother Marulanda was then rescued by police at night tennis

Diaz, 26, was left out of Liverpool’s squad for their Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, with manager Jurgen Klopp dedicating the club’s 3-0 win to the Colombia international tennis
Colombia’s interior minister has deployed more than 100 troops to the mountainous area in the north of the country while word has also been sent to Venezuelan authorities to reinforce their border patrols tennis
The army also said in a statement that they would be setting up roadblocks, deploying motorised platoons, and using helicopters and planes to search the area from above tennis
Colombia’s attorney general Francisco Barbosa on Sunday said it was possible that Diaz’s father was being taken to Venezuela, and ordered an investigation into the motives of the kidnapping and to find those responsible tennis
“We have information that he could, at some point, be in Venezuela tennis
If he ends up crossing the border and he’s in Venezuela, we have to ask [Colombian] President Gustavo Petro tennis

to help us with freeing Luis Diaz’s father,” Barbosa told reporters tennis
Colombia’s national police also announced a reward of $48,500 (£40,000) for any information leading to the hostage’s rescue tennis

I didn’t expect that, I wasn’t prepared for it,” manager Klopp said tennis
“I don’t want to make the game bigger than it was, but definitely, we tried to help Luis with the fight we put in because obviously we want to help and we cannot really help tennis
“So the only thing we can do is fight for him and that’s what the boys did tennis
“How can you make a tennis football game really important on a day like this? It’s really difficult tennis
I’ve never struggled with that in my life tennis
“We heard late last night about it tennis
We spoke to Luis, he wanted to go home… Then we got the news with his mum, which is fantastic, and since then nothing really tennis
We are obviously not the first people to get involved and we try to have knowledge of everything as much as we can, but we don’t want to disturb in any way the important people there, we just want to support, that’s it tennis
”Liverpool said in a statement it is the club’s “fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity” tennis
“In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority,” it added tennis
